Food For Thought

Did you know that beans are high in fiber. We need to consume up to 25 to 35gm each day. Fat free refried beans provide 6gm of fiber in every 1/2 cup, Blackeye peas offer 4gm per 1/2 cup, kidney beans contain 6gm of fiber in 1/2 cup, and garbonzo beans win with 7gm per fiber in 1/2 cup!!

Shopping Tips

Buying in bulk will save you money in the end, especially for the larger sized family. Next time you hit the grocery store, look for the price per unit and not the price per item. You'll come out ahead!!

Cooking Tips

When using sour cream or cream cheese in a recipe, use the fat free alternative. This will cut back on both your calorie and fat intake.

Todays Nutrient

Calcium: adequate calcium intake will help ensure the health of our bones. Research has also shown that along with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, calcium can help in the control of high blood pressure. Adults need 2 to 3 servings everyday with 8 ounces of low-fat milk, 1 ounce of cheese, or a half cup low-fat cottage cheese equalling a serving.

Nutrition News

Research is now telling us that butter spreads made with hydrogenated fats may cause more harm than good. Look at the ingredients label next time you go to the store. If it includes hydrogenated fats, leave it on the shelf. Try "Take Control" or "Brummel and Brown".
